red to blue:  fundraising

NOPE Neighbors' cornerstone activity is to help flip the country from Republican Red to Democratic Blue by getting involved in local, state, and federal elections. We are raising funds for progressive candidates, knocking on doors for elections in nearby states, writing postcards, making phone calls, and asking our friends and relatives to get involved in key elections in their states.

With the 2018 midterm elections coming soon, NOW is the time to take action!  To take back the House, the Democrats need to flip 23 Republican seats, while keeping the 194 seats they currently hold. As Thomas Friedman wrote in Sounding Code Red: Electing the Trump Resistance, "this election is your first chance since 2016 to vote against Donald Trump".  NOPE has raised $110,00 for 15 U.S. Congressional candidates through our 2018 Giving Circle. See a summary of our Flipping Fifteen candidates here. More detailed information about these candidates and how to contribute to their campaigns through NOPE is provided below.

Elaine Luria (VA 2) was our NOPE April Giving Circle Candidate (see below).  A truly impressive candidate with a strong gun control position, NOPE is enthusiastic about continuing to raise funds for her during our "Virginia is for Democracy Voters" Giving Circle.

NOPe has selected Elaine luria as our nope Giving circle candidate for april.

Elaine Luria is running for U.S. Congress from Virginia's District #2 against incumbent Scott Taylor (R).  This district encompasses Accomack and Northampton Counties, portions of York County, the cities of Virginia Beach and Williamsburg, and parts of the cities of Norfolk and Hampton.

A small business owner and retired Navy commander, she was deployed six times to the Middle East and Western Pacific as a nuclear-trained Surface Warfare Officer.  She culminated her 20-year Navy career by commanding a combat-ready unit of 400 sailors. Elaine was one of the first women in the Navy’s nuclear power program and among the first women to serve the entirety of her career on combatant ships. She lives in Norfolk with her husband and daughter. You can also learn more about her at her website.  We had the opportunity to "meet" her via Skype at our meeting. Attendees were very impressed by her particularly her strong position on gun control.  Read more about why we selected Elaine Luria as our Giving Circle candidate for April.

Political Giving Circle

A Giving Circle engages a group of individuals on a regular basis who donate to a pooled fund and includes a participatory process to decide where to give the funds.  By pooling our funds we have greater impact.  Anyone who donates has a voice in deciding where our contribution goes.

NOPE's Giving Circle began in February/March 2018, when we donated $15,000 to Conor Lamb's campaign.  In April, we are donating to the Elaine Luria campaign.   Donors to the Giving Circle do not need to attend meetings and ideally the circle will reach well beyond those who attend.  At each monthly meeting we’ll review proposed candidates and allocate our funds to one candidate selected by the group.  If you want to suggest a candidate for consideration, please complete this template and return it to five days before the meeting.   For more information or to join our Giving Circle contact Debra Fried Levin at
