NOPE Meeting Notes - August 27, 2018

More than 50 people attended our August meeting. Here are the meeting highlights:

FUNDRAISING

Save Our Democracy

Please give now, here's the link.

For September we are supporting four outstanding candidates who are running strong campaigns, in flippable districts, where our donation can make a difference now. We Skyped with one of those candidates - Aftab Puraval. He's a dynamic candidate and good on progressive issues. Our other candidates are Abby Finkenaur, IA1; Danny O'Connor, OH12; and Colin Allred, TX32.  Here's a link to a one-page description of the 4 candidates.  Please give now to our Save Our Democracy candidates at this link.  Your single donation will be divided among the 4 candidates so please donate generously.

Multiply Your Donation Many Times Over

To date our crew of 20+ NOPE volunteers, most of whom are first time fundraisers, have raised $96,000 for 10 US House candidates running in flippable districts.  We do it all by emailing our friends and family,  very rarely does anyone say no, they just ignore your email,  and then often they respond generously.  If you have not yet signed up to be a member of our monthly Giving Circle and/or be a member of our crew of Fabulous Flipping Fundraisers, please go to this link, answer a few questions and we'll send you everything you need to get started.  We'll send you a personal ActBlue link for our current 4 candidates, sample email text, and helpful hints.  Your friends and family  are looking for an opportunity to make a difference, you are helping them be strategic and effective in their giving.

Best House Races - 60+ flippable seats

NOPE selects its candidates based on good data, candidate research, and strategic decision making on where our donations can have the greatest impact.  We hope that you'll support NOPE's candidates and others too.  Our goal is to identify good candidates for you and help you be an informed political donor.  Here's the data we work with, compiled by Jim Shelton with  Swing Left 31st Street.  Democrats need to flip 23 seats.  The pollsters and pundits believe it's likely to happen, but you know how that went in 2016.  Let's have no regrets on Wed, November 7th. There are many really good candidates running strong races. Money will help put them over the top in what promise to be narrow margins of victory.  Please give now, give generously and give wisely.

CANVASSING

Here's a great article about the effectiveness of canvassing.  Carol Krafka is coordinating our canvassing calendar, crew, and training.  I dare you to say that 5 times fast.... Voter contact is the key to winning in what promise to be very close races. If you're new to canvassing, we'll get you up to speed, we're offering lots of training and team-up opportunities. If you have not already done so join our list of prospective canvassers.  Here's the link  to get updates for canvasses and training.  And here's the calendar of canvassing and training opportunities. If you need more information you can contact  Carol here:  ck.2018canvass@gmail.com. A few immediate opportunities follow, check the calendar for details:

Saturday & Sunday, Sept 8-9,  Beach and Canvassing Weekend, Virginia Beach, VA2, for Elaine Luria Thurs., Sept. 13, 6:30 Training and Pot Luck, Chevy Chase, DC  -  Delicious Dining and Delving into the Delights of Door Knocking

POSTCARDS

At our meeting we did postcards for Vangie Williams who is running to represent Virginia's 1st congressional district.  She's an African-American women running a strong campaign in a tough district.  But there's no telling what will happen on Election Day this year given all the upsets we've seen so far, most recently in the Massachusetts primary that elected Ayanna Pressley as their democratic nominee to Congress. So let's do our part to help Vangie win. At our meeting we completed 295 postcards, and we have handed out the other 200 cards to several postcard-writing volunteers (thank you!!).

DC AREA OPPORTUNITIES

We welcome all participants in our national efforts, but we are DC-based, so we also focus on what we can do locally. Here are a few opportunities:

Re-elect Elissa Silverman for DC Council At-large

One of our active members, Ruby Carmen, is leading the charge for Elissa. Here's her note asking you to join her in supporting Elissa:  Please join me in supporting Elissa Silverman in her re-election bid as At-Large DC City Council member. There are several reasons why I am supporting Elissa in November. I had the opportunity to meet and hear Elissa at two recent gatherings. Her background in fiscal policy and her skill set in budget analysis give her an advantage we cannot afford to lose on our Council. Elissa is an important advocate for the people in this city who care about honest, fair, and equitable governance.  Elissa chairs the Committee on Labor and Workforce Development and co-authored the Family Paid Leave Act.  She is very involved in the work of the Education Committee and is often referred to as the “sixth man.” Because Elissa is not taking any corporate or PAC money for her campaign, it is very important that we get behind her and support her in any way we can. Please click on the ActBlue link and give whatever you are able to give.  https://secure.actblue.com/donate/goelissa  .  To learn more about Elissa, the important work she is doing for all wards in our city, and how you can help please visit her website: http://www.elissasilverman.com/ .   And be sure to order a lawn sign here: https://www.elissa2018.com/yard-sign

Neighbors Rising In Support of Our Immigrants Families

While we are committed to changing the political landscape our neighbors need help now.  Through Neighbors Rising lead by Jeannie Engel we are providing that help. Here's the link to an update on all their activities.  Most immediately they are doing a book drive for Identity’s after school program:  only 40 out of 275 books to go!  The gift of books reminds our young neighbors, their families and our full community that our community cares about our neighbors and that we stand with our neighbors made more vulnerable by anti-immigrant and anti-other sentiments. Go to the update link for details.

Racial Justice Working Group

The next meeting of the Racial Justice Working Group is Thursday September 13th at 6:30 at Jean's house. RSVP jeansimons@gmail.com for address. For information about the history and structure of this effort, check out this link to the Racial Justice Working Group Update. Our goal is to create a multi-racial group to fight against racial injustice locally.

Our Nope Neighbors Kitchen Cabinet has selected 4 outstanding candidates for us to support now through the end of September: Abby Finkenaur, IA1; Aftab Pureval, OH1; Danny O'Connor, OH12; and Colin Allred, TX32.  We recommend these candidates because they are in flippable districts where our donations can make a difference now. The 4 candidates we are supporting met one or more of the following criteria:  they are running against a particularly notorious Freedom Caucus member or a notorious Republican leader; they are running in a district that overlaps with state legislative districts that if won, could help flip the state legislature; and they have shown a commitment to advancing science and truth.  Here's a link to a one-page description of the 4 candidates. Please give now to our Save Our Democracy candidates at this link.  Your single donation will be divided among the 4 candidates so please donate accordingly.

NOPE Neighbors' Complete Slate of Candidates - $84,000 to 10 Candidates

We encourage you to support these NOPE candidates as well as make wise decisions in donating to the many other worthy candidates running this cycle.

Virginia Blue Wave 2019

Virginia has elections every year - yes, every year - because their gubernatorial and state legislative races are in off years, 2017, 2019...  Our friends with Virginia Blue Wave 2019 have identified 20 Delegate   districts and six State Senate districts that Democrats need to hold or flip in 2019 to finally win a majority in the VA State legislature.  They have created an easy way for you to make a monthly contribution to help flip VA blue.  Here's the link where you can make a monthly donation of $16, $32, or more, starting today.  Please be a good neighbor and support our friends in Virginia.

A Big Reach Senate Candidate Worth Supporting Now - Mike Espy for Mississippi

NOPE is not involved in Senate races this year.  However, we work closely with 31st Street Swing Left, for advice on targeting candidates, and they have made a case for the importance supporting Mike Espy for Senate in Mississippi.  The Senate is so incredibly important and the current balance is 51-49 in favor of the Republicans.  There are good prospects to pick up 2-3 seats in AZ, NV, and TN, but several Democratic seats are highly vulnerable.  Winning Mississippi could make all the difference!  Here is the complete list of Senate races and the link to support Mike Espy's campaign through 31st Street Swing Left.

Neighbors Rising - Helping our Immigrant Families -  Book Drive

This is the 1st anniversary book drive for Identity’s after school program for 3rd and 4th graders.  There's a Neighbors Rising book wish list online at Politics & Prose at https://www.politics-prose.com/wishlist/991.  The goal  is to collectively purchase 25 copies of each of 10 titles.  You can ship the books to Identity at 414 East Diamond Avenue, Gaithersburg, MD 20877 or order them for store pickup and a Neighbors Rising representative will pick them up approximately once a week.  Neighbors Rising wants to expand its members so they can continue to send the message that people in our greater DC-metro area embrace and support our immigrant neighbors who are made more vulnerable by the increase in anti-"other" sentiments.  With that in mind, buy a few books AND get five others to buy books too!

Racial Justice Working Group

Our Racial Justice Working Group has been involved in educating ourselves about the history and current issues facing our African American neighbors. Convened after one of our neighbors was arrested for partying-while-black, working group members continue to learn and develop an action plan. To join this group, email Jean Simons at jeansimons@gmail.com

July 23, 2018 NOPE Meeting Notes

NOPE NEIGHBORS

July 23, 2018 MEETING NOTES

We had an inspiring meeting last week. The house was filled with over 45 people anxious to know what they could do to stop the madness.  And then we Skyped with two remarkable candidates who are running for Congress in flippable districts (more about them follows). The bottom line - the Blue Wave is real and it is us.  Here are our Nope meeting notes and information on what you can do to save our democracy. Our next meeting is on Monday, August 27th, hope you can join us, here's the link to RSVP.

Save Our Democracy Candidates

Our Nope Neighbors Kitchen Cabinet has selected 4 outstanding candidates for us to support now through the end of September: Abby Finkenaur, IA1; Aftab Pureval, OH1; Danny O'Connor, OH12; and Colin Allred, TX32.  We recommend these candidates because they are in flippable districts where our donations can make a difference now. They are running strong campaigns, and are well-positioned to be among the 23 congressional seats Democrats need to win majority in the US House and finally put a check and balance on the White House.

At our July meeting, we Skyped with Colin Allred. A civil rights lawyer who worked in the Obama administration and is a former NFL player, Allred is running against Pete Sessions in the 32nd CD of Texas, a Dallas suburb. Allred was absolutely inspiring during our Skype conversation.  Leading political analysts consider the race a toss-up, it's just too close to know who will win this one. Please give now to our Save Our Democracy candidates.  Here's the link.  Your single donation will be divided among the 4 candidates so please give generously.

Virginia Is For Democracy Lovers

For the month of June and July NOPE supported 4 outstanding Virginia women running in flippable districts through our Virginia Is For Democracy Lovers fundraising campaign. We Skyped with one of those candidates during our meeting - Abigail Spanberger, a former CIA operations officer, who is running to represent VA's 7th CD. Another inspiring candidate who is working tirelessly to uphold our democracy. We have raised $39,245 for the 4 candidates to date, giving each about $10,000 to help win their congressional seats. If you have not yet given to them here's our Virginia Is for Democracy Lovers donation link. You can learn more about Elaine Luria, VA2, Leslie Cockburn, VA2, Abigail Spanberger, VA7 and Jennifer Wexton, VA 10 at this link.

You are encouraged to support these NOPE candidates as well as make wise decisions in donating to the many other worthy candidates running this cycle.

Canvassing - Now and the Big Push after Labor Day

Carol Krafka, an active member of our NOPE crew, has generously agreed to take the lead on coordinating our canvassing with efforts. NOPE Neighbors will be managing canvassing launches that leave from upper NW, DC and near the Friendship Heights metro stop. Here's a list of upcoming canvasses being organized by NOPE, J Walkers, Swing Left 31st Street. and Virginia Democrats Forward. Most of these canvasses will occur after Labor Day. So rest up in August - we have a lot of work to do September through Election Day!

NOPE Neighbors Meeting - July 23, 2018

With Justice Kennedy stepping down and the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh as his replacement, some days it's just hard to keep up the good fight.  But despair is not an option. Updates Since the Last Meeting

Virginia Is For Democracy Lovers  -  4 Outstanding US House Women Candidates Need Your Support Now

For the month of June and July NOPE is supporting 4 outstanding Virginia women running in flippable districts through our Virginia Is For Democracy Lovers fundraising campaign.  Please give now at this link. This donation will be divided among 4 candidates so please give accordingly. If you are member of our Giving Circle, please make your July donation if you have not yet done so. We are dedicating 2 months of donations to VA Is for Democracy Lovers because we are supporting 4 candidates. Here's the donation link.

Background information: Of the 23 seats needed to flip the U.S. House from red to blue,  4 of the seats considered “flippable” seats are in Virginia. If Democrats Want to Retake the House They Need to Win Big in Virginia. As this analysis by Vox explains, Virginia ranks just a notch below California and Pennsylvania among the crucial states for Democrats to get a majority. Our candidates are:  Elaine Luria, a retired naval commander running in the 2nd Congressional District (CD), where she would represent the Norfolk-area naval establishment; Leslie Cockburn, an acclaimed journalist running in the  5th CD, which includes Charlottesville, the site of the white supremacy march; Abigail Spanberger, running in the 7th CD, a former CIA operations officer who is taking on David Brat, the ultra-conservative who upset Eric Cantor; and Jennifer Wexton, a well regarded VA state senator running against Barbara Comstock in Northern Virginia’s 10th  CD, where so many of our VA 2017 state candidates won.  More information can be found here.

Canvassing & Training July 22 and beyond

We have worked closely with Swing Left 31st Street and J Walkers Action Group on prior campaigns, now we are taking the next step and will be coordinating our canvassing with each other.  We are thrilled that Carol Krafka, an active member of our NOPE crew, has generously agreed to take the lead on coordinating our canvassing efforts.  NOPE Neighbors will be managing canvassing launches that leave from Upper NW, DC at and near the Friendship Heights metro stop.  Consider attending training if you have not canvassed before, even if you don't plan to canvass on Sat, July 22.  It will be a good way to see what's involved in canvassing and get yourself ready for our big push after Labor Day.

Canvassing for George Scott, PA 10*  on Saturday, July 22

Training at 9:00 am, in Chevy Chase, DC.

Depart: 10:00 AM. Return by 6:00pm

Location: Harrisburg, PA

Sign-ups: Carol Krafka (ck.2018canvass@gmail.com) Email:  1) your name, 2) your cell #, 3) whether you can offer a ride OR need a ride, and 4) whether you would like to have a canvassing partner. A short training session will be offered near Friendship Heights metro before cars depart. New canvassers can be paired with an experienced partner

Here's a list of upcoming canvasses being organized by NOPE, J Walkers and Swing Left 31st Street. There's no calendar for August. So rest up, we're gonna be busy in September and October mostly for our VA candidates.

More Canvassing

No need to wait for NOPE or any other group to lead a canvassing effort. Canvassing is a great way put your frustration to good use and you'll be pleasantly surprised by how interesting the experience is. People are pleasant 99% of the time.  Google the VA candidate's office and sign up for a canvass -- Jennifer Wexton is the closest in N. Virginia, but Elaine Luria, Abigail Spanberger, and Leslie Cockburn all have offices that can be reached within about a 2.5 hour drive. Every vote will matter in the midterm elections.

June 18, 2018 NOPE Meeting Notes

NOPE NEIGHBORS June 18, 2018 MEETING NOTES

Virginia is for Democracy Lovers, Canvassing Opportunities, Personal Pitches.....

Here’s a summary of the meeting and some post-meeting updates.  Our next NOPE meeting will be Monday evening, July 23.

Giving Circle support for US House candidates

For June and July, our Giving Circle is all about Virginia Is For Democracy Lovers.  It's time to flip the VA Congressional delegation and pick up at least 4 seats toward the 24 seats we need to flip the U.S. House. This article gives you the lay of the land in VA:  If Dems Want to Win the House They Need to Win Big in VA.  Here are the four Virginia candidates we are supporting:

  • Elaine Luria, a retired naval commander running in the 2nd Congressional District (CD), where she would represent the large Norfolk-area naval establishment;
  • Leslie Cockburn, an acclaimed journalist running in the  5th CD, which includes Charlottesville, the site of the white supremacy march, and many rural counties;
  • Abigail Spanberger, running in the 7th CD, is a former CIA operations officer who is taking on David Brat, the ultra-conservative who upset Eric Cantor; and
  • Jennifer Wexton, a well-regarded VA state senator, is running against Barbara Comstock in the Northern Virginia’s 10th District, where so many of our VA 2017 state candidates won.

We provided additional information about each candidate at the meeting, which you can read here.

When you give to the Giving Circle, your single donation will be split evenly among the 4 races. HERE'S THE LINK.

Your donation can be multiplied many times over through our peer-to-peer email effort.  For more information and materials send a note to NopeNeighbors@gmail.com.

Canvassing Opportunities

Barbara Comstock (VA10, Northern VA) is considered among the most vulnerable members of Congress, her district voted for Hillary, Governor Northam won there,  and most of the state legislative challengers in her district won.

We're joining the Blue Wave VA10/40 Flip Canvass to knock on doors in the part of the 10th Congressional District that also overlaps the 40th House of Delegates district where Donte Tanner lost by 99 votes.  We need him to win there next year to take the majority in the VA House of Delegates.

When:  June 30th, 10:00 - 5:00.  If going from upper NW DC, we'll leave at 9:00 am and be back by 3:00 pm
Where: Campaign Office at 5618 Ox Rd, Fairfax Station, VA 22039
RSVP: If going from Upper NW DC RSVP to Carol Krafka, at ckrafka@gmail.com.  She can help with carpooling and pick-ups at the Friendship Heights Metro (at Booeymonger). If you're going directly to VA RSVP here:  https://actionnetwork.org/events/blue-wave-1040-flip-canvass

George Scott, Pennsylvania 10 (Northeast PA):  There will also be opportunities to canvass for George Scott....more information later.

NOPE in YOUR Neighborhood

We talked about how we can spread the word about NOPE and our Giving Circle to friends, family, and acquaintances, including the idea of NOPE members holding small gatherings to introduce their friends to NOPE and the NOPE Giving Circle.  We also discussed working to expand the diversity of NOPE members.

Family Separation Action Steps

Here's a link describing action steps you can take in response to the family separation and detention nightmare that's happening now.   It's from Barbara Woodall with Common Good in Bethesda.  These are important actions we can take right now.  Also, on June 30th there are marches planned all across country including in Washington, DC.  For more information go to the Families Belong Together website.

Racial Justice Working Group

Our next meeting will be held in July.  Topic TBD. If interested in learning more about this project send an email to jeansimons@gmail.com.

Neighbors Rising to help our immigrant neighbors

Jeannie Engel talked briefly about Neighbors Rising's goals.  She also shared the following information from one of her client groups, Identity, about the June 30 rally for for immigrants and against the Administration's latest assault on migrants, asylum seekers and dreamers.

1.  Call the White House - 202-456-1111 - or email https://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/. Tell President Trump to ensure humane immigration policies for the protection of migrants, asylum seekers, Dreamers and TPS holders.
2.  Call Congress - 202-224-3121 - or email via and https://www.house.gov/ and https://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm. Tell Congress to ensure humane immigration policies for the protection of migrants, asylum seekers, Dreamers and TPS holders.
3.  Get involved. Join the Identity community and attend the nationwide protest planned for June 30th.  The main demonstration is scheduled from 11 am to 2 pm at Lafayette Square in Washington DC. Click here for details and to find June 30th events planned around the country.
4.  Educate yourself. We know the escalating anti-immigrant sentiments and actions are dizzying  and hard to keep track of.  These organizations provide current information on what is happening and how you can help:
• WOLA
• United We Dream
• Families Belong Together

Personal Pitch Page

We are not an endorsing organization beyond our Giving Circle picks.  If you have donated $50 or more  to three of our monthly picks, you can send a Personal Pitch to our NOPE list.  We'll compile a group of these Personal Pitches for Nope-sters once a month (or so) with the disclaimer that these are Personal Pitches from active members of our Giving Circle, not NOPE endorsements.  Your pitch should have no more than 100 words and include URLs and relevant contact information.  It will be subject to the discretion of our Kitchen Cabinet.

Our most recent pitches include:

Please come support Trailblazers PAC, a non-partisan organization which recruits, trains, and endorses candidates who run for office at the county level and below on a platform of transparency and clean government and who meet strict financial disclosure rules.  In 2017 it endorsed candidates from five different parties in New York and Pennsylvania. Trailblazers offers workshops for candidates covering good government principles, the nuts and bolts of setting up and running a campaign, communicating with the media and using social media, and how to merge messaging and fundraising.  It provides campaign financing to those candidates whom it endorses.  Address provided upon request.

Jess King for PA11, June 26 event
Jess King, PA 11 ( https://jesskingforcongress.com ) is running a progressive grassroots campaign in a redrawn PA district against GOP incumbent Lloyd Smucker. She ran uncontested in the primary and drew a surprisingly strong turnout due to tireless canvassing, and has received many endorsements including one from Bernie Sanders. Jess, who is located in nearby Lancaster County –  2.5 hours from DC –  can use feet on the ground and donations now!

Liz Watson, Congressional candidate for IN-9

Liz Watson is  running an incredibly strong campaign in IN-09, and just won a three-way primary with 66% of the vote.  Liz is a workers' rights attorney and a fifth generation Hoosier.  Polling by GQR in May shows that Liz is down only 5 points. For more than 40 years this was a Democratic seat and this is our year to take it back.  Liz has out raised her opponent three quarters in a row without taking a dime of corporate PAC money.  Liz is supported by 35 labor unions, Emily's List, the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, the Indivisibles and SwingLeft in her district.  Please support her now at:  https://secure.actblue.com/donate/jodie4lizin9. Earlier pitches focused on the DC primary and included:

Kim R. Ford for DC Congressional Delegate #1 on the Ballot

Kim R. Ford is running against Eleanor Holmes Norton, who has been our delegate for 27 years.  It’s time for a fresh approach to the DC-Congress relationship, and Kim R. Ford will deliver.  Kim is dynamic, thoughtful, and gets things done.  She focuses on what the delegate can do rather than what she can’t do.  Based on her experience working at the intersection of federal and state/local policy, she has a plan to accomplish a lot, including:  ensuring that Congress understands DC’s needs and achievements, expanding DC residents’ access to federal assistance, and moving towards statehood.  Learn more at her website - www.kimrford4congress.com. For more information contact Joanna Pratt at prattsamuels@gmail.com

Ed Lazere for City Council Chair

The Washington Post calls the race for DC Council Chair "the marquee race".   As the founder and Executive Director of the DC Fiscal Policy Institute, Ed has led efforts to win a higher minimum wage, more affordable housing, more resources for high-poverty schools and paid family and medical leave.   As our city has grown and thrived many people are being left behind. The racial wealth gap is staggering -- the median net worth for black DC households is $3,500, compared with $284,000 for white households. Ed understands how policy can be used as a tool to reverse this trend. Attached is a compare and contrast between Ed Lazere and  Phil Mendelson. For more information contact Helen LaCroix helenhoguet@gmail.com

Ward 3 Blue Wave Democrats - Democratic State Committee Slate

I (Debra)  worked with Beau Finley and Elizabeth Mitchell  last year in Virginia. They have a fantastic model to refocus the DC Democratic Committee on electing Democrats in GOP-controlled districts around the country  to end GOP gerrymandering.  They plan to take their model from Ward 3 to show that the Democratic Party can work with grassroots organizations to elect Democrats, rather than taking a top-down approach. For more information, go to www.ward3bluewave.com.  Attached is a one-pager with additional details.  For more information contact  Debra Fried Levin at dflevin15@gmail.com.

DumpTrump-Dems4Action - Democratic State Committee Slate

Dump Trump - Dems4Action is  a group of more than 40 progressive community leaders and organizers running for DC Democratic State Committee, aka party leadership. Dump Trump Dems believe party leaders need to take action around local issues, proposing bold solutions to DC's affordable housing crisis and addressing the huge inequities in our schools and neighborhoods. The State Committee should be mobilizing DC Democrats to support progressive Dems running for Congress in other jurisdictions. That's the only way we'll ever win DC more autonomy or statehood. DumpTrump will be next to all of their names on the ballot. Learn more at: https://demsforaction.nationbuilder.com  For more information contact Debra Fried Levin at dflevin15@gmail.com
